Day of the Canaries in Haría, Lanzarote

The most important day of the year hits the tiny Canarian village of Haría, in the north of Lanzarote, on the 30th of May, in the form of Canarian Day, the day of the Canaries.

The locals of the village of Haría, Northern Lanzarote, proudly celebrate the day by taking part in all kinds of typical Canarian activities and games in the square, such as Canarian wrestling and bowls and dressing up in traditional dress while serving traditional food from huge pots.

The ever generous and fun loving locals proudly fly the flag and are more than happy to include any outsiders who wish to join in on the fun.

The locals also break out in traditional Canarian song with their guitars and other typical stringed Canarian instruments (and whatever else they can find lying around). They might deafen you with their flat singing though, earplugs advised!

As usual, despite the economic difficulties faced by many Canarians, the motto is “hey, let’s just have fun!”. Truly inspirational in a world full of trouble. Something we can all learn from.

All in all, a good time is had by everyone.
